Another magnificent place to go canyoning is La Ribagorza, a region in northern Lleida located next to Pallars Jussà, Pallars Sobirà and the Val d’Aran. It borders the highest mountain in the Pyrenees, Aneto, so you can imagine how much water, elevation and spectacular terrain the area offers for canyoning and many other mountain sports.
The entire Noguera Ribagorçana valley is steep, green and full of magical places to discover. Its canyons offer powerful flows, crystal-clear water and unforgettable mountain scenery.

La Ribagorza is home to a large number of canyons. Below, we introduce some of the most popular and frequently chosen descents in the area.

The Twelve Waterfalls of Liri Canyon is located in the village of Liri, only around 25 minutes from El Pont de Suert. It is famous for its impressive vertical waterfalls and includes a total of 12 abseils of up to 25 metres. A two-car shuttle is highly recommended if you want to complete the full canyon. If you only descend the first seven waterfalls, you can leave the vehicle at the Liri viewpoint car park.
Known as the beast of the valley, Aigüeta d’Eriste is an advanced-level canyon that can normally only be descended towards the end of summer, when the water level is lower. It is divided into several sections, although the fourth and final section is the most popular. The approach is relatively straightforward and follows an ascending trail along the river’s orographic right bank. When you reach the old stone bridge, you will find the entrance to the canyon. Its famous 25-metre natural slide and powerful water flow make this a route for experienced canyoners only.

The Aigüeta de Barbaruens Canyon, located below the village of Barbaruens, is famous for its long natural slides, high jumps and highly aquatic character. If you have already been canyoning several times, it is an excellent choice. The activity normally lasts between four and five hours. It is advisable to book with a company that has a 4×4 vehicle, as this can significantly shorten the approach on foot.
Obarra Gorge is an essential stop if you are visiting La Ribagorza. This impressive gorge is home to the beautiful Obarra Monastery and is also an excellent setting for adventure activities such as aquatic trekking and via ferratas.
The Croqueta de Obarra Via Ferrata is known throughout Spain for its magnificent 360-degree views over the valley. Its technical sections make it an intermediate-level activity, and we always recommend completing it with a professional guide.

Viu de Llevata is the village you need to visit if you want to descend the Viu de Llevata Canyon. It is an intermediate-level route with large pools, natural slides and numerous jumps, offering around four hours of activity. It is one of the best options for discovering canyoning in La Ribagorza and building confidence before moving on to more demanding descents.
Once you have completed Viu de Llevata, you can progress to Barbaruens and, if your experience develops well, perhaps eventually tackle Aigüeta d’Eriste. This is a sensible progression for enjoying the sport responsibly.
Erta Canyon is a wild descent that joins Viu de Llevata at its outlet. It is quite long and includes several intermediate walking sections, which can make the route feel demanding. However, its spectacular passages between two large limestone mountains make it well worth the effort. It is a canyon that every enthusiast should complete at least once, and a two-car shuttle is required.
La Ribagorza is a place that naturally invites you to go canyoning. Breathing the mountain air, discovering spectacular scenery and connecting with nature while enjoying an outdoor sport is an experience that is difficult to match. With professional supervision, you can enjoy a safe and unforgettable adventure.
All you really need is the desire to have fun, laugh and experience something different. You can then contact a local adventure company that operates in the area and ask them to recommend the most suitable canyon for your ability level.
The company provides all the technical equipment required for the activity, including neoprene socks, a two-piece wetsuit, a harness and a helmet. You only need to bring sports shoes, a swimsuit and water. If the activity lasts longer than four hours, it is also advisable to bring something to eat.
Tell us about your experience, the participants’ ages and the type of adventure you are looking for. We will recommend the most suitable descent based on the difficulty, water level and time of year.
