Gramontill Canyon

The Gramontill Canyon is one of the dry canyons you can discover in the Pallars Jussà, very close to La Pobla de Segur.

It is a particularly interesting option for anyone looking for a practical, dynamic descent focused on rope techniques.

Here you do not need large pools or a strong water flow to enjoy canyoning. The main elements are the rock, natural drops and rappels.

Gramontill works very well as a standalone activity, as technical training or as the first descent of a day in which you want to combine several dry canyons in the area.

Technical details
  • Approach: 20 min
  • Descent: 1 h 45 min
  • Return: 15 min

Option with vehicle shuttle: immediate approach.

Price

€45 per person.

Difficulty level

Beginner.

The difficulty level should always be adapted to the participants’ experience and the conditions on the day.

Gramontill can be approached as a beginner canyon with supervision and is especially interesting as a technical route for participants who have already completed some rappels.

The fact that it is a dry canyon does not eliminate the risks associated with a vertical activity.

Who is the Gramontill Canyon suitable for?

Gramontill can be a very interesting option for different types of participants.

For beginners, it provides an opportunity to learn the basics of rappelling in a real canyon environment, provided they are accompanied by a guide or someone with the necessary experience and knowledge.

For participants with more experience, it is an excellent place to improve fluidity and work on rope management.

It is also a good option for training before tackling longer or more vertical canyons.

What will you find during the descent?

The route is based on progressing through the canyon bed, downclimbing and completing a series of rappels.

In this type of canyon, good group coordination is especially important.

When the manoeuvres are carried out in an organised way, the descent becomes dynamic and enjoyable.

If it is a beginner outing, we use the first obstacles to explain:

  • Correct rappelling position.
  • Speed control.
  • How to use the descender.
  • Basic communication.
  • Safe progression at anchor stations.

Equipment required

To complete this descent you need specific canyoning equipment:

  • Helmet.
  • Harness.
  • Safety lanyards.
  • Descender.
  • Locking carabiners.
  • Ropes of suitable length for the route.
  • Mountain footwear with good grip.
  • Clothing suitable for the temperature.

Gloves are recommended to protect your hands during repeated rope manoeuvres.

In winter, we also recommend bringing a headlamp and warm clothing.

Best time to do Gramontill

Autumn and winter are particularly interesting seasons for this descent.

During these months, you can continue canyoning without having to spend long periods in cold water.

Spring can also be a good time when the weather is stable.

After heavy rainfall, the condition of the canyon bed should always be checked before entering.

Thermal canyons are a perfect alternative when temperatures drop. Discover canyoning in naturally warm thermal waters and enjoy a unique experience in the Pyrenees.

Safety in Gramontill

One of the most common mistakes is relaxing too much simply because the canyon has no water.

Falls remain one of the main risks.

You should also pay attention to:

  • The condition of the anchors.
  • The length of the ropes.
  • Possible rope friction.
  • Loose rocks.
  • Communication within the group.

Dry, polished rock can also be surprisingly slippery.

Gramontill and other dry canyons in the Pallars Jussà

One of the great advantages of this area is that several dry canyons are located very close to each other.

You can combine Gramontill with the Serradell Canyon if you are looking for a varied and accessible day of canyoning.

If the group has more experience and wants greater vertical continuity, another option is the Moró Canyon.
