Preparation for canyoning and mid-mountain access tests

Preparation for canyoning and mid-mountain access tests

Mountain sports access tests require more than simply being in good physical condition. Depending on the speciality, candidates may need to demonstrate endurance, navigation skills, progression over varied terrain and command of specific technical skills.

At MundoCanyon we offer practical and personalised preparation for access tests, training in real terrain in the Pallars and the Lleida Pyrenees.

The aim is to identify which parts of the test you need to improve and focus the training precisely on those areas.

  • Format: Personalised preparation
  • Specialities: Canyoning / Mid-mountain and navigation
  • Location: Pallars / Lleida Pyrenees

The number and content of the sessions will depend on the initial level, speciality and the time available before the test.

Who is this preparation for?

It is aimed at people who want to take an access test and need to work specifically on the areas that are assessed.

The preparation can be adapted both to those who start well in advance and to those who already train independently but need to reinforce navigation, technique, progression or effort management.

Preparation for the Canyoning access test

The specific Canyoning access test combines physical demands, progression through mountain terrain, navigation and technical content specific to the discipline.

Currently, the official test includes a section involving progression through varied, unmarked terrain with 1,500 metres of accumulated positive elevation gain, a minimum distance of 12 km and a backpack weighing at least 10 kg, in addition to other exercises established for the speciality.

Preparation may include:

  • efficient progression over varied terrain;
  • pace and effort management;
  • training with a backpack;
  • navigation;
  • specific canyoning techniques;
  • review and correction of manoeuvres;
  • simulation of situations similar to the test.

Preparation for Mid-mountain and navigation

The specific Mid-mountain access test assesses the ability to progress over unmarked terrain, overcome different types of obstacles and navigate accurately.

State regulations establish for this speciality an itinerary of at least 15 km, 1,500 metres of positive elevation gain and a 10 kg backpack. Navigation is carried out through a circuit of up to 6 km with a minimum of five control points, within the time set by the examining board.

During the preparation we can work on:

  • map reading and contour lines;
  • compass use and bearings;
  • route choice;
  • locating control points;
  • off-trail navigation;
  • time management;
  • progression over boulders, slopes and uneven terrain;
  • training with a backpack.

How the preparation is organised

We do not use the same programme for everyone. First, we assess the test you want to prepare for, your experience and the areas you find most difficult.

From there, the training is structured in four steps:

  1. Initial assessment: identify your current level.
  2. Identification of weak points: navigation, endurance, technique, pace or progression.
  3. Specific work: train the areas you genuinely need to improve.
  4. Simulation: apply what you have learned in situations similar to those in the test.

Train for the test, not just for the mountains

Having mountain experience does not automatically guarantee a good result in an access test. The format requires candidates to complete specific tasks, using particular equipment and within set time limits.

That is why the preparation aims to combine real mountain experience with training focused specifically on the criteria assessed in the relevant call.

Personalised training: duration and price tailored to you

MundoCanyon courses are adapted to each participant’s level, previous experience and objectives. For this reason, the duration of the training, number of sessions and price are determined individually.

Before planning the course, we have a short conversation to understand your starting point: what experience you have, which techniques you already master, what you need to improve and what your objective is.

Someone starting from zero does not need the same training as someone who already practises the activity and wants to perfect specific techniques. Likewise, some participants need a single focused session, while others require a more complete and progressive training process.

Based on this assessment, we define the most suitable content, duration and format and provide you with a corresponding personalised quote.
