Mountain navigation course

Mountain navigation course in the Pyrenees

This mountain navigation course is designed for people who want to learn how to read a map, use a compass correctly and move more safely through mountain terrain.

The training takes place mainly in the Pallars and the Lleida Pyrenees, working directly in real terrain. The aim is to stop relying exclusively on GPS or a mobile phone and learn how to understand relief, anticipate the route and make informed decisions.

  • Level: Beginner
  • Previous experience: Not required
  • Location: Pallars / Lleida Pyrenees

Who is this course for?

It is aimed at hikers, mountaineers and people who practise outdoor activities and want to improve their independence in the mountains.

It is suitable both for complete beginners and for those who already use navigation apps but want to understand maps and terrain better.

What you will learn

  • basic topographic map reading;
  • contour lines and terrain forms;
  • scale and distance calculation;
  • orienting the map;
  • using a compass;
  • taking and following bearings;
  • identifying natural reference points;
  • choosing attack points and handrails;
  • basic route planning;
  • using GPS and a mobile phone as complementary tools.

How the training is organised

First, the fundamental concepts of map reading, compass use and terrain interpretation are explained. They are then applied directly in mountain terrain.

During the practical part, participants identify landscape features, relate them to the map, follow bearings and make navigation decisions.

The route is adapted to the level of the group and allows the difficulty to increase progressively.

Navigation means interpreting the terrain

Navigation is not simply about following an arrow or reaching a set of coordinates.

It also means understanding what shape the terrain has, which features can be used as references, which route is the most logical and what alternatives exist if you lose your position.

That is why the course places special emphasis on the relationship between the map and the real landscape.

Requirements

No previous experience is required. A basic level of fitness is recommended, as well as being used to walking in mountain terrain.

What you will be able to do after the course

The training provides a foundation for interpreting topographic maps, using a compass and planning simple routes with greater confidence and judgement.

Further practice will be essential to consolidate these skills and progress towards more complex situations, such as navigation in poor visibility or off-trail routes.

Personalised training: duration and price tailored to you

MundoCanyon courses are adapted to each participant’s level, previous experience and objectives. For this reason, the duration of the training, number of sessions and price are determined individually.

Before planning the course, we have a short conversation to understand your starting point: what experience you have, which techniques you already master, what you need to improve and what your objective is.

Someone starting from zero does not need the same training as someone who already practises the activity and wants to perfect specific skills. Likewise, some participants need a single focused session, while others require a more complete and progressive training process.

Based on this assessment, we define the most suitable content, duration and format and provide you with a corresponding personalised quote.
