The snowshoe ascent to Pic de la Coma del Forn is the most demanding and sporty of our snowshoe routes. This high-mountain itinerary starts at Pleta del Prat, in Tavascan, and climbs to one of the peaks in this sector of the Parc Natural de l’Alt Pirineu.
Unlike introductory excursions, this route requires a good level of fitness. Over approximately 9.5 kilometres, we will climb close to 1,000 metres of positive elevation gain to reach an altitude of approximately 2,680 metres at Pic de la Coma del Forn.
During the ascent, the landscape gradually changes from forested terrain to a true high-mountain environment. One of the highlights along the route is Estany de Mascarida, located above 2,300 metres, before continuing towards the upper reaches of the mountain.
If weather and snow conditions allow us to reach the summit, Pic de la Coma del Forn offers extensive panoramic views over the mountains of the Parc Natural de l’Alt Pirineu and the surroundings of Tavascan.
This experience is designed for those who already enjoy hiking and mountain activities and want to discover a more intense and demanding snowshoe route.
Intermediate – demanding.
The accumulated elevation gain, duration, altitude and progression over snow mean that participants need a good level of fitness and previous experience hiking in the mountains.
Previous snowshoeing experience is not essential, as the guide will explain the necessary progression techniques. However, due to its physical demands, this is not an introductory route.
Mountain conditions can significantly affect the difficulty of the route. The final itinerary will always be decided by the guide according to the weather, snow conditions and safety considerations.
The figures are approximate. In winter mountain conditions, the state and depth of the snow can affect the effort required, the route itself and the duration of the activity.
The guide will decide the final itinerary according to the conditions on the day of the excursion.
As we gain altitude, the landscape gradually changes from the forests around Pleta del Prat to an open high-mountain environment.
During the excursion, we will practise different snowshoe progression techniques and learn how to move more efficiently over snowy terrain with varying gradients.
The route also allows us to experience how conditions and the landscape change as we climb from the valley floor to elevations close to 2,700 metres.
This ascent is recommended for people with a good level of fitness who are used to mountain routes with significant elevation gain.
It is a suitable option if you have already completed several-hour mountain hikes and are looking for a more active winter experience than an introductory snowshoe route.
Although previous snowshoeing experience is not essential, it is important to be prepared for around six hours of activity and close to 1,000 metres of positive elevation gain over snowy terrain.
If you are looking for an easier first snowshoeing experience, we recommend starting with routes such as Comes de Rubió or Pla de la Font.
The summit is the main objective of the excursion, but reaching it cannot be guaranteed.
On a winter high-mountain route, factors such as snow conditions, wind, visibility, weather or terrain conditions may make it necessary to modify the itinerary or establish a turnaround point before reaching the summit.
The final decision will always be made by the guide, with the safety of the group as the top priority.
For this route, it is particularly important to have waterproof hiking boots suitable for winter conditions, warm technical clothing, a waterproof and windproof jacket, gloves, a hat, sunglasses, sun protection, water and enough food for the entire activity.
We recommend dressing in layers so that you can adapt your clothing to changes in temperature, wind and the level of physical effort during the ascent.
You will also need a suitable backpack for a day in the mountains, with enough space for an additional warm layer, water and food.
The season depends directly on the presence and condition of the snow. Snowshoe routes are usually possible during the winter months and, when conditions allow, also in early spring.
Due to the altitude and nature of this ascent, conditions can change quickly. The activity, the itinerary and the possibility of reaching the summit will always depend on the weather and safety conditions in the mountains.
