Intermediate-level canyoning

Intermediate-level canyoning in our area is not only spectacular but also meets many criteria that allow us to classify canyons into different groups. Here, we recommend these as the next step in your adventure.

Once you have completed the beginner level, you can move on to the intermediate level.

In intermediate-level canyoning, you will find more obstacles inside the canyon, with greater height and water flow, as well as longer approaches, routes, and returns. However, the latter can be relative, since in some intermediate canyons you can use vehicle combinations to avoid long hikes before or after the descent.

Can I start at the intermediate level without doing the beginner level first?

This is a very common question. We believe there are two important points to consider before starting at the intermediate level:

  • You must consider your physical and mental abilities to perform any adventure activity. If you think you are not ready, starting at the beginner level will offer a better experience and help guarantee a safe and enjoyable day.

  • The time of year and water flow are also important. For example, an easy canyon at high water flow could be considered intermediate level at that time. Water temperature can also vary several degrees from early spring to late summer.

What’s the difference between beginner and intermediate levels?

Canyons are rated based on their length, vertical drop, and number or proximity of escape routes. Intermediate canyons tend to have longer routes and bigger vertical drops, requiring better physical endurance. On the other hand, escape routes become fewer or may even disappear in some areas.

At the beginner level, length and vertical drop are very manageable for most people, and there are usually several emergency exits. At the intermediate level, you need at least a minimum fitness level to complete the route and its challenges, although someone reasonably agile and accustomed to hiking should be able to finish it without major difficulty.
